The Lower Keys League of Women voters has been approved by the Florida League for promotion to full chapter status, President Joan Wallin announced at their Fifth Tuesday social recently. The news vied with but did not overshadow the guest of honor, Monroe County Mayor Sylvia Murphy.

The chapter’s application will now be forwarded to the national organization for formal ratification.

Florida LWV President Deirdre Macnab posted that she was “proud of all of you for starting a new league, building it up and on to full ‘league-dom’ at the national convention!”

“I gathered from Deirdre’s comment on our FB page that our approval at the convention is virtually a foregone conclusion. Cool,” wrote Jane Newhagen, founding board member and membership committee chair. She credited Secretary Diane Johnson as instrumental in compiling the application.

Anyone interested in membership is invited to phone Newhagen at (305) 294-6073.

  1. Last years legislative session we passed a mandatory child joint custody bill and a sweeping alimony reform bill. Florida LWV lobbied against this bill that would have given children access to both parents after a divorce.
Governor Scott vetoed this bill after meeting with Florida NOW and Florida LWV.
