Washington, DC –  At the request of Rep. Joe Garcia and Rep. Jared Polis, several House Representatives joined in a Special Order on the House floor, seeking a meaningful discussion on comprehensive immigration reform. Rep. Garcia highlighted the story of a young boy from his district, Charlie, who wrote a letter describing the devastating effects of a broken family, urging Congress to pass a bill.

“Disagreement is no reason for inaction. There is no reason why families, like Charlie, must be torn apart. There is no reason why children, like Charlie, must suffer the consequences of our failed immigration system and face the holidays without his father” said Rep.  Joe Garcia.

As the year draws to a conclusion, Rep. Garcia hoped to reignite the conversation on immigration reform. On Monday, Garcia issued a letter to colleagues, inviting them to participate in the Special Order. While there was a large Democratic presence, and many members of the immigration community sat in support in the House Gallery, no Republican House members showed up.

Congressman Garcia is the principal sponsor on the H.R. 15 bill and has lead various efforts in an attempt to bring it to the floor for a vote.

On December 12, 2013, Congressman Joe Garcia (FL-26) announced that Congressman Rush Holt (NJ-12) has become a cosponsor of H.R. 15.

“I want to thank Rep. Holt. I am thrilled that the support for H.R. 15, bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform legislation, continues to grow. It is absolutely critical that the House of Representatives takes up immigration reform as soon as Congress returns to session in January. This issue is too important to wait any longer,” said Rep. Joe Garcia.

Congressman Garcia, a staunch advocate of comprehensive immigration reform, and original sponsor of H.R. 15, has continuously led the effort in pushing for the passage of a common sense solution that will only benefit millions of families across the U.S., secure our border, and grow our economy.

  1. Our country regularizes over 100,000. people a month. No other country in the world is so generous. Most of the new immigrants are from third world latino countries. Most of the illegal aliens are from these same countries as well. I am against amnesty, which is what Congressman Garcia supports, but he is too dishonest to frame it that way. Most of the illegal aliens do not leave after their work or student visa’s expire. There is no incentive for them to follow the law because they know the laws will not be enforced. They knowingly violate our laws and our congresspeople want to give them amnesty??Disallow them to operate and they will self deport.
