Valerie Hird is next presenter at the Friends of the Key West Library lecture series—Monday, February 24, 6:00 p.m., Studios of Key West, 600 White Street.  Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Hird is an artist and teacher who has traveled for 25 years to the Middle East and Central Asia, thereby forming deep creative ties to the people in that part of the world.  Using slides in her presentation, she will discuss the impact of this adventurous travel on her art—and how her art “explores cultural mythologies and the roles they play in Eastern and Western societies”.

Primarily a painter in oils and watercolors, Hird has worked also in numerous other media.  She is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and Vermont College.  At present, she is an adjunct professor of art at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont, where she has taught for over twelve years.  A frequent exhibitor both in the United States and internationally, as well as a contributor to collections sponsored by the United Nations and the U.S. State Department, Hird shows her work regularly at the Nohra Haime Gallery, New York City, and at Lucky Street Gallery, Key West.

The Friends of the Key West Library weekly lecture series is free and open to the public.  Seating is available on a first come, first served basis.  This year’s lectures are every Monday, ending on March 17.  Next lecturer is Latin American and Caribbean specialist Brian Latell, March 3.  FOL’s newsletter, including a list of lecturers, is located at http://friendsofthekeywestlibrary.org.
