A Tale of Two Cities: Habana & Key West en Plein Air, original works by Stephen LaPierre, will open at The Tropic Cinema’s Gallery Space at 416 Eaton Street, Thursday Feb 13th, with a public reception from 6:30-7:30 PM, sponsored by Five Brothers, The Green Parrot Bar and Bone Island Brewing.

The show runs from Feb 13 through March 20, and helps launch the historic official visit this month of leading Cuban artists to the southernmost city.

A rising star since he first settled here in 2010, LaPierre’s  work is often described as a mix between the iconic Key West folk artist, Mario Sanchez, and the American  Ashcan School’s Edward Hopper.

His 2011 nightscape, “San Carlos,” captures the grandeur of the 19th century Duval Street structure, considered to be the cradle of Cuba’s independence movement, when Jose Marti united the exile community in Key West in 1892 to launch the final phase of his campaign for Cuba’s independence. Martí so loved the San Carlos that he called it “La Casa Cuba”.

LaPierre’s most recent one-man show included over 50 original Key West oil paintings, opening to record crowds in December 2012, in the main gallery of the Custom House Museum. He also received a coveted Ann McKee Artist Award in both 2012 and 2013 and his work has just been selected to hang at the Key West International Airport.

This season’s show at the Tropic’s popular gallery space will enable even more locals, snowbirds and tourists to enjoy a sampling of LaPierre’s classic Key West and Havana pieces.
