A Sharp contrast to Pam Bondi

Equality Florida Action PAC, the largest organization dedicated to electing pro-equality candidates in Florida, has endorsed George Sheldon for Attorney General.

“As Florida moves forward towards full equality, the next Attorney General will have a tremendous impact on the everyday lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in our state,” said Stratton Pollitzer, chair of the PAC. “Time and again, George Sheldon has proven that he is an advocate for basic human rights.”

In sharp contrast to Pam Bondi, George Sheldon is a long-time champion of fairness in all aspects of life. He supports the Florida Competitive Workforce Act, which would prohibit anti-LGBT discrimination in the workplace, advocates the repeal of the shameful ban on marriage equality and was responsible for implementing the repeal of the ban on adoptions by gay and lesbian Floridians who want to provide a loving home for so many of Florida’s unloved children.

September 22, 2014 might have been the day that Florida’s discriminatory ban on same-sex marriage would be overturned – four years to the day that the ban on adoption was ruled unconstitutional;  except for the shameful opposition of Gov. Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi.

George Sheldon, then Secretary of the Department of Children and Families, along with then-Governor Charlie Crist, showed true leadership, responding the same day by publicly embracing the decision, calling for an immediate end to the ban and paving the way for thousands of prospective parents to begin adopting the children they loved.  As head of DCF, the state agency charged with enforcing that ban, George Sheldon presided over lifting the ban on gay adoption.

“As with Americans of the 1950s and 1960s who quietly turned away from racial hatred and segregation, Americans today are putting aside the hostility and bigotry that have discriminated against the LGBT community for all too long,” added Sheldon.  “Supporters of these bans argue ‘states’ rights,’ just as slave states did in the nineteenth century, before the Fourteenth Amendment promised equal protection of the law.”

With marriage equality looming on Florida’s horizon, “We must have a pro-equality Attorney General in Tallahassee” added Pollitzer.  “We encourage every Floridian who values basic human rights to support George Sheldon for Attorney General.

In addition to the Equality Florida Action PAC, George Sheldon has been endorsed by Palm Beach County Human Rights Council Voters Alliance, Democratic Environmental Caucus of Florida, Florida Planned Parenthood Political Action Committee, national Association of Social Workers Florida Chapter, Florida Nurses Association Political Action Committee, The Miami Herald, Palm Beach Post, Tampa Bay Times, La Gaceta, Tampa Tribune, National Women’s Political Caucus of Florida, West Central Florida Federation of Labor, Florida AFL-CIO, Florida Young Democrats and the Florida Alliance of Retired Americans.

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of Equality Florida and pledge to continue to fight to make Florida fair for all hard-working families.”

Each election cycle, Equality Florida Action PAC’s endorsements serve as a valuable source of information for hundreds of thousands of voters statewide.
