In support of the 103rd anniversary celebration of the birth of Key West’s most famous playwright, Tennessee Williams, Mayor Sylvia Murphy and the Board of Monroe County Commissioners recently presented Producer Dennis Beaver with a proclamation declaring the writer’s March 26 birthday as Tennessee Williams Day in Monroe County.

A reception honoring the occasion, and his life in Key West, will be held at the Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit, 513 Truman Ave. just off Duval St. on Wednesday, March 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The entire month of March has been a celebration of Williams’ life and work in Key West. Born in Columbus, Mississippi on March 26, 1911, he maintained a local residence from the 1940s until his death in 1982. The celebration has included screenings of classic films based on William’s award-winning plays and local competitions in both poetry and painting, arts in which the playwright was also accomplished. The Key West Art and Historical Society has featured an exhibit of his paintings throughout the month. Also on display are copies of his published work, including books of poetry, and a video of him reading his poetry.

Wednesday’s celebration will offer, in addition to the awards presentations, a birthday cake, wine and other light refreshments. A suggested donation of $10 from attendees will be appreciated, organizers said.
