Key West Pickleball Club Organizational Meeting
3pm, Saturday, August 24, 2013
La Brisa Club House (1901 S. Roosevelt)
Key Westers – and tourists — have been playing pickleball on the island for about 5 years. (More background in: this article.) They’ve had a great time, had good work-outs and met lots of nice people on the “borrowed” tennis courts at Higgs Beach – one of the most scenic pickleball venues in America. At this point they feel it’s the right time to get organized.
Monroe County, who controls the Higgs Beach recreational facilities, plans to rework the park in the near future. For several years now the official Master Plan has called for two dedicated pickleball courts at the west end of the park (across the street from the Casa Marina). The regular players in Key West want to do their part to accelerate that process by working with the County on the planning and funding for the courts. They want to establish a legal entity to interface with local governments and other organizations on any local Pickleball-related matters, to ensure the PLAYERS are represented.
To go forward with this, an official IRS 501c3 non-profit organization will be established, tentatively called the Key West Pickleball Club. This will involve selection of a board of directors, filing of official paperwork and establishing procedures (annual meeting, etc). It will also enable interested pickleballers to get involved in the management of the club and provide input on future actions and activities. They wish you to join them at the organizational meeting this Saturday as they begin this process.
If you are new to Pickleball in Key West (or anywhere), you can connect with the local players on their Facebook Page. You can usually find them on Saturday (at 8:30 am) or Sunday (at 8:00 am) mornings at the Higgs Beach courts. They provide everything you need to learn.
A kind benefactor has offered to help get the planned dedicated courts built, if the local players are willing to put in the effort to get officially organized. Join them at the La Brisa Club House this Saturday at 3pm to get involved in this effort! Call 305-292-2682 if you have any questions.
